Nar-ART-Ives : Therapeutic Guided Imagery

Nar-ART-ives creates a more integrative healing experience for clients through art-based exercises and activities.

This Institute innovation uses therapeutic guided imagery narratives, drawing prompts, and word-based exercises to create an integrative healing experience for clients. Nar-ART-ives incorporate both left- and right brain focused processes in order to assist clients with integrating foundational non-verbal processes into their healing journey.

What's the Goal of Nar-ART-ives?

The goal is to co-create images of safety, community, comfort, protection and self-efficacy—all of which we know can be difficult for clients to imagine due to their life experiences of trauma and toxic stress, often related to not just personal, but also communal trauma and toxic stress. Nar-ART-ives help construct not only healing images, but also the ability to connect with and reflect about these healing images and the relational contexts in which they are used. When the clinician uses their own voice and entire self to introduce the story co-regulation can happen naturally.

Implementing Nar-ART-ives

When clinicians implement Nar-ART-ives, they assist their clients in building bridges between right-brain, non-verbal processes and left-brain, verbal processes, resulting in a more balanced integration of the hemispheres’ abilities. They present clinicians with the ability to help clients calm their brains and related bodily processes. Using these interventions, clinicians collaborate with clients on co-creating experiences of connection and hope.

This innovation offers a truly integrative and wholistic approach to healing. By engaging the whole brain and allowing for the presence of stories of hope and connection our clients learn to connect or reconnect with stories of connecting and hope within their own culture and context.
